For the construction project, 3 separate individual basins were initially excavated from 2013 to create the so-called intermediate state. The northern basin section C was already completed in 2019; for the final construction of the southern basin sections A and B, the remaining embankments ("Rehnen") are currently being removed so that the final structural state of the HRB-Ellinghausen will be reached shortly.

The Emscher, which was straightened during industrialisation, will meander through the basin as part of the final expansion by excavating a new riverbed. Alternating between low and high flow rates of the Emscher, the retention basin will take on a floodplain-like character.

For more than 10 years, TABERG Ingenieure GmbH has been supporting the large-scale project for the construction of the "HRB Ellinghausen" with both planning and technical expertise.
