NEWS: On 24 June 2021, the Bundestag passed the bill to amend the Federal Climate Protection Act. The Bundesrat approved the amendments in its plenary session on 25 June 2021. The law describes a binding path to climate neutrality by 2045 instead of 2050, setting binding targets for achieving this goal.<\/p>\n

The Federal Government was ordered to amend the 2019 Climate Protection Act by the Federal Constitutional Court at the end of April in order not to burden future generations with the increasing climate protection efforts.<\/p>\n

The greatest savings must be achieved in the energy sector and industry, as this is where the avoidance costs are lowest and the highest emissions occur in these sectors. It follows that a renewable energy supply is the key to reducing emissions in all sectors in which renewably generated electricity can replace fossil fuels. In the other sectors, including transport, buildings, agriculture and waste management, CO2 <\/sub>reductions must be made in order to achieve the climate targets.<\/p>\n

A new target for the preservation and expansion of so-called natural sinks such as forests and moors has also been included in the law. As the expansion of sinks requires a long lead time, the federal government is now starting to intensify the rewetting of moors and the necessary forest conversion and expansion.<\/p>\n

The new German climate target for 2030 also takes into account the EU climate target for 2030. Compliance with the permitted annual emission levels of the individual sectors will be regularly reviewed and determined in 2024 for the years 2031 - 2034 and in 2034 for the years 2041 - 2045. It was also stipulated that from 2024 and then every two years, the climate protection report will also include the status and development of CO2 <\/sub>-pricing in the EU and compatibility with the national CO2 <\/sub>-pricing and the national climate targets. The Climate Protection Act stipulates greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045 and negative emissions after 2050 (we remove net greenhouse gases from the atmosphere).<\/p>\n

As part of the \"Engineering for a Better Tomorrow\" programme, the MuP Group is helping to achieve compliance with climate targets.<\/p>\n
