Title: Partial demolition planning and supervision of the former listed motor pool of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel

The public sector is planning to build on a plot of land that was formerly used as a motor pool for Kiel University. For this purpose, approx. 800 m² of the motor pool building had to be demolished. The building was a listed building and could only be partially demolished after a special licence under monument protection law had been granted. The challenge here was that the building was connected to existing buildings on two sides and had to be separated from them. The existing buildings and the neighbouring buildings had to be protected during the demolition work in such a way that their stability was guaranteed at all times. Furthermore, the part of the building to be demolished contained a groundwater purification system that could neither be relocated nor decommissioned. The groundwater purification system was therefore secured by means of an enclosure so that the building could be dismantled while the groundwater purification process was ongoing and the system was protected against damage from the demolition work.

In addition to the partial demolition, an area of approx. 160 m² was completely gutted so that it could then be redesigned.

In the course of the demolition work in spring to summer 2022, clinker bricks were salvaged from the façade in accordance with the condition of the listed building exemption licence so that they could be reused for a new building at a later date. The dismantling of the building's roof cladding was carried out under the supervision of species conservation experts, as the use of the building as a bat nursery roost could not be ruled out with certainty. However, no bats were found during the demolition, so that the demolition could continue without interruption.
