Investigation of pollutants at the Bonhoeffer Community Centre, Heidelberg

WHAT-WE-DO: As part of the preparations for the conversion and renovation of the Bonhoeffer parish centre in Heidelberg, MuP Umwelttechnik GmbH Heidelberg carried out comprehensive pollutant investigations in the area of the daycare centre as well as the sacred and community rooms. The aim of the investigations was to identify existing pollutants and, based on the results of the investigations, to plan the necessary occupational safety measures and - if necessary - to have polluted components removed in the course of the construction work.

As the investigations and sampling had to be carried out while the building was in operation, the MuP employees were constantly in close contact with the responsible architects and the building users.

The sampling points were also determined in close consultation with those involved in the project and the users. A minimally invasive approach to sampling ensured that the building could be used without disruption.

The samples taken were then analysed in a laboratory. Based on the applicable rules and regulations, the test results were analysed with regard to a possible need for remediation. The building materials and waste generated during the planned renovation work were also assessed with regard to their classification under waste legislation.

The investigations revealed that the building materials were not contaminated with levels of pollutants that would have necessitated remediation measures. However, several building materials were identified in hidden applications for which separation and separate disposal was mandatory due to waste legislation.

In addition to the conversion work on the existing building, it was also planned to extend the building by constructing a new extension. The geological conditions of the planned construction site had to be determined as the basis for the planning. To this end, MuP Umwelttechnik GmbH Heidelberg carried out a geotechnical subsoil investigation in advance of the new construction project.

Once the planning had been completed, construction work on the conversion and new construction of the Bonhoeffer community centre could begin in 2021.
