M&P Hamburg: Orienting investigation for the old armament site EIBIA - "Werk Karl", Liebenau

On the initiative of Eickhofer Heide GmbH & Co. KG, in coordination with the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Building and Climate Protection and the district of Nienburg, an orientating investigation (OU) is being carried out on the old armaments site "EIBIA - Werk Karl" Liebenau in the district of Nienburg on the basis of the historical investigation. The conversion site is located directly on the edge of the villages of Liebenau and Steyerberg.

The old Liebenau "Werk Karl" armaments site covers an area of around 1,000 hectares and was used for a wide variety of purposes both before 1945 and up until the 1990s. Only one third of the entire site is suspected to be contaminated. The majority of the old Liebenau armaments site "Werk Karl", i.e. around 670 ha of a total of approx. 1,000 ha, is not suspected of being contaminated. Significant parts of the old armaments site "Werk Karl" have been used for decades as a drinking and industrial water catchment area to a considerable extent.

The property contains over 400 almost completely preserved buildings, 80 kilometres of paved lorry roads, 30 kilometres of railway lines and a freight depot.

For the OU, an investigation concept was available for the investigation measures on the EIBIA - "Werk Karl" armaments site in Liebenau, in which the previous investigation results were summarised, a deficit analysis was carried out and measures for further investigations were recommended.

The existing investigation concept was reviewed, concretised and specified by M&P and is now being implemented in coordination with the district of Nienburg, the Hildesheim Trade Supervisory Office, the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Building and Climate Protection, the landowners and the technical project manager IABG.

As part of the OU, explosive ordnance, soil and groundwater investigations are being carried out at the EIBIA - "Werk Karl" armaments site. Work on the OU began in the 1st quarter of 2021 with the review of the documents handed over and the examination of the investigation concept. The field work began with the construction of the planned groundwater measuring points in April 2021. The explosive ordnance and soil investigations began in May.

Mull & Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH is carrying out the OU in collaboration with the technical project manager IABG. Partial services were awarded to subcontractors.
