project: Orienting investigation of old deposits Tündern

What we did

Project Overview

"Elevate Your Projects with German Precision: Where Expertise Meets Ingenuity for Engineering Solutions That Surpass Expectations."

From September 2019 to January 2020, an exploratory environmental investigation was carried out for two contaminated sites in Tündern that are listed in Lower Saxony's register of contaminated sites. The measures included sampling, examination and evaluation of topsoil, small pile-drilling, soil gas and groundwater analyses as well as risk assessments in accordance with applicable guidelines. The old landfills, consisting of backfilled lowlands and a former sand and gravel pit in residential areas, were analysed for their extent, landfill properties and potential impact on soil, soil air and groundwater. The results were documented, including an assessment under waste legislation and a risk assessment for human health.

  • Brief description:
    • Orientating investigation of two sites listed in the state's register of contaminated sites

Lower Saxony in Tündern. The first old landfill site consists of backfilled lowlands or former ponds that were created from a former oxbow lake of the Weser. The lowlands were backfilled with household and bulky waste, excavated soil, building rubble and commercial waste. The second old landfill comprises a former sand and gravel pit, which was backfilled with household and bulky waste, commercial waste, garden and park waste, agricultural and forestry waste, building rubble, excavated soil and road rubble. Both old landfills are located in residential areas.

The objectives of the exploratory investigation are to determine the extent of the two landfills as well as the thickness and composition of the landfill and the landfill cover. With regard to the use of the two old landfills as a residential area, a risk assessment for the landfill cover is to be carried out for human health via the soil-human impact pathway. The landfill is to be assessed in terms of waste legislation. In addition, the potential impacts of the landfill and the hazards for the protected goods soil, soil air and groundwater are to be assessed.
