The PFAS challenge

WHAT-WE-DO: Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH is developing a new soil remediation technology together with a group from research and industry.

Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated aliphatic substances (PFAS) contaminate the soil and groundwater in many places. These are industrial chemicals which, due to their properties, are used in the paper industry, in fire extinguishing foams or in outdoor textiles, for example.

The PFAS substance group comprises approx. 4,700 individual substances and is also ubiquitously detectable due to its persistent properties.

Remediation techniques are not yet available, particularly in the area of soil contamination, which means that some contaminated properties cannot be developed further, or only if the contaminated soil is landfilled at high cost.

With the help of this new process, a cost-effective remediation method is to be established in collaboration with the ufz (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research) and the companies Geologik and Sensatec, and the soil is to be preserved as an asset.
