Many employees are pleased that spring makes working outdoors more pleasant again. However, too much sun can have negative effects on the skin and eyes in the short and long term due to UV radiation.
Current figures on occupational diseases from the BG Bau show that white skin cancer caused by natural UV radiation accounts for around 18 % of all reports, with more than 2,700 cases. The damage often only occurs after 20 to 30 years, although one hour of UV exposure on 50 days of intense sunshine per year is sufficient.
Workers in building construction, civil engineering and road construction as well as roofers and carpenters are particularly affected. From April to September between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., UV exposure in Germany is so high that additional protective measures are required.
The determination of the necessary operational protective measures is based on a risk assessment, whereby the measures should be staggered according to the TOP principle from technical to organisational to personal measures. In addition to sun sails or sunshades, adapted working hours, clothing that covers the body and sun protection products are all possible.
