Rondorf North-West planning area - relocation of the Galgenbergsee lake

WHAT-WE-DO: AMELIS Projektentwicklungs GmbH & Co. KG is developing the new Rondorf Nord-West urban quarter in the south of Cologne with around 1,300 residential units. The project is linked to the relocation of the Galgenbergsee lake and various measures to realise urban development goals. The city of Cologne aims to set standards in terms of neighbourhood development in Rondorf through the construction of an unbundling road, inner-city traffic calming measures, the expansion of public transport through the light rail connection to Rondorf and Meschenich and the expansion of the social infrastructure.

As part of the realisation of the new development area, it is planned to relocate the Galgenbergsee lake in the northern planning area, whose ecological status is currently rated as moderate to poor. The lake will be extended to the west and filled in to the north and south, creating space for the new development area and the transport links. The lake will be ecologically enhanced in the course of the redesign.

Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, Cologne, is supporting the client in the planning and realisation of the sea relocation in various fields of activity. The Germany-wide expertise of the M&P Group is being utilised and cross-company collaboration is taking place with Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH in Cologne and Hanover, M&P Umwelttechnik GmbH in Heidelberg and IBGW in Leipzig.

During the planning phase, M&P assessed the contaminated site situation, carried out deep drilling to assess the stability of the new lake and investigations of the lake sediments, and created a groundwater model and a soil function assessment, including a soil protection concept and soil compensation concept.

In the course of the execution, M&P will provide pedological monitoring of the work and, due to the location of the lake in water protection zone III, (microbiological) monitoring.
