Sampling of motorway ditches and rainwater retention basins

In order to ensure regulated water drainage on the motorways and thus increase road safety, the Westfalen motorway authority carries out regular clearing work on the ditches and rainwater retention basins on the motorways. The cleared material is likely to be contaminated with pollutants typical of motorway traffic, such as material abrasion from vehicles or fuel leaks. In addition to possible contamination by heavy metals or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ditch spoil often has a high organic content. For this reason, sampling of the excavated material must be carried out prior to maintenance measures in order to determine the possible disposal routes for the extracted soil material.

For this purpose, ditches and rainwater retention basins were sampled by the M&P team from Osnabrück as part of the project "Sampling ditches and rainwater retention basins 2022 for the area of responsibility of the Osnabrück field office", the sample material was analysed from a soil science perspective and then sent to the laboratory for analytical testing. In contrast to road investigations on state and federal roads, which are also part of the M&P team's remit, we were supported in this case by the motorway maintenance services of the Westfalen motorway.

Contaminant-free and, to a certain extent, contaminated trench clearing material can be recycled under certain conditions. If recycling is ruled out due to excessive material contamination, the material usually has to be deposited in a landfill. This usually requires further laboratory tests, for example to determine the calorific value, the respiration activity in 4 days (AT4) or the gas formation rate over 21 days (GB 21).

M&P carries out the legal waste assessment on the basis of the analysis results and then forwards them to the client and, if necessary, makes suggestions for the disposal route. This means that our customer receives everything from a single source.
