Demolition of a department store in the pedestrian zone

The former Dillingen department stores' in Dillingen / Saar is currently being demolished. It had been empty for several years and now had to be dismantled to clear the construction site.

Prior to the demolition, intensive structural analyses and corresponding demolition specifications were required, as part of the building was directly adjacent to the neighbouring buildings.

MuP Umwelttechnik drew up the specifications and supervised the award of the contract. As part of the dismantling work, we took over the specialist construction management and supported the construction management of the Dillingen city building authority.

Due to the neighbouring buildings, the demolition work was carried out using saw cuts and manual demolition. As the demolition site is located in a pedestrian zone, the concrete components that had been sawn free were lifted out of the building using a cherry picker. The demolition curtain is used to protect neighbouring traffic routes and road users during mechanical demolition. Due to traffic-related reasons and uncertainties regarding the subsequent use of the site, the basement walls remain on site. The basement walls were supported using steel structures. The floor slab of the building was partially removed, exposing previously unknown, large-scale foundation blocks. Groundwater drainage was used for interventions in the subsoil due to the groundwater, which at times was at the level of the basement floor slab. The cellar pit was backfilled with natural material and compacted. Due to the wintry weather conditions, work on backfilling the basement pit was interrupted in December 2022.
