Tempelhof Projekt GmbH has been responsible for the refurbishment, operation and development of Tempelhof Airport on behalf of the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing since 1 January 2011. Tempelhof Airport is Europe's largest listed building and has a unique historical setting that reflects important periods in Germany's history.
The building, which was erected between 1936 and 1941, is an example of the monumental architecture of the Nazi regime, but it is also a symbol of the art of engineering. In 2011, it was honoured by the Federal Chamber of Engineers as a "Historic Landmark of Engineering Architecture in Germany". After the Second World War, it was used by the USA, particularly during the 1948/49 airlift, and became a symbol of freedom.
The airport site covers around one million square metres and has a gross floor area of around 300,000 m². It is of great architectural and urban significance and is considered one of the most spectacular buildings in Europe.
Since its closure in 2008, the listed building has been used as an event venue. It attracts people from all over the world who present innovative products and ideas, make music, organise congresses and more. In the coming years, Tempelhof Airport is to be developed into a place of experimentation and a new urban quarter for art, culture and the creative industries. It will offer space to work, try things out and organise unique events.
Tempelhof Airport's proximity to Tempelhofer Feld, one of the largest green spaces in the city centre, enhances its special character and appeal. The creative industries are showing great interest in locating in this area, and many companies and institutions are already based there. The development of Tempelhof Airport is intended to provide new impetus for Berlin as a creative location and bring it more into the social focus of the city. The aim is also to use the building as a bridge between the city and Tempelhofer Feld with a high quality of stay.
In preparation for the "Technical Infrastructure 2030" (TI2030) project, Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH has been carrying out extensive inventories of pipes and cables that are no longer in operation in the up to 7 km of media ducts at Tempelhof Airport since 2021. Existing pipes with insulation materials potentially containing harmful substances were mapped out and their remediation planned in accordance with TRGS 519 and TRGS 521. Mull und Partner Ingenieursgesellschaft mbH is responsible for the construction management and site supervision of the dismantling of the media ducts, which has been ongoing since summer 2023 and is expected to continue until 2024, as well as the construction of the technical centres. Particular challenges include the limited availability of space, the cramped conditions in the working areas, difficult access to the components, high room temperatures and the listed status of the building as a whole.
Our expertise and decades of experience in detecting hidden pollutants, recognising other sources of danger and developing customised remediation strategies guarantee the success of projects and ensure safe use in the future. Our focus is on the reliable and cost-efficient implementation of refurbishment projects in existing buildings. The colleagues at Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH in Berlin are proud to be partners of Tempelhof Projekt GmbH and to help make the building fit for a variety of uses in the coming decades.
