Geothermal energy - an important building block for achieving climate targets

The use of renewable energies plays a central role in the energy transition. The German government's Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is one of the key control instruments when it comes to the expansion of renewable energies. The aim is to increase the share of renewable energies in the electricity supply to at least 80% by 2030.

To achieve these goals, near-surface geothermal energy is increasingly being used to heat and control the temperature of residential and commercial buildings.

Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft mbH Braunschweig, based in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, is leading by example. It is planning a sustainable energy concept using geothermal energy for the construction of its new depot. The concept envisages a bivalent system in which the base load coverage of the heat requirement is to be covered by geothermal energy using a geothermal probe field and the peak load coverage by an air-to-water heat pump. Active regeneration of the ground using heat input from chillers is also planned. By equalising the heat input quantities in cooling mode with the heat extraction quantities in heating mode, a more stable temperature level can be achieved in the subsoil, thus ensuring more effective system operation. On behalf of Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft mbH Braunschweig, M&P ENERGY GmbH is planning the dimensioning and construction of the geothermal probe system. The scope of services ranges from conducting an orientating geothermal feasibility study to field investigations, such as the drilling of an exploratory borehole including the development of a pilot geothermal probe and the performance of a geothermal response test, through to construction supervision and project management, including previous planning phases in the design, approval and execution phases. In addition to the actual planning, we are also available to KVG in the forthcoming award procedure. The pilot geothermal probe for exploratory purposes will be integrated into the subsequent geothermal probe field so that the costs for the client are kept as low as possible.

The use of geothermal energy represents a climate-friendly alternative to energy generation using fossil fuels and makes a significant contribution to mastering the energy transition. As the project team at M&P ENERGY GmbH, we are proud to make a valuable contribution to a better future with our work.
