Detective work for a better tomorrow: Historical research as the basis for today's planning

Historical sources form an important basis for the reconstruction of historical land use and explosive ordnance contamination. Historical research can be used to identify possible contamination or structural relics in advance and can be taken into account in the time and financial planning. In this way, construction delays and unpleasant surprises - such as the unexpected discovery of explosive ordnance - can be reduced.

Most historical documents, plans and maps are stored in archives of various origins around the world. Often - especially when it comes to the reconstruction of war events - the most important documents can be found in the large national archives in Germany, the USA, Great Britain and Russia. The task here is to track down and analyse the relevant archival material relating to the situation in the wealth of documents, often with detective-like precision.

With almost 30 years of experience in the field of national and international archive research, Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft not only has almost unrivalled expertise in the most important sources, but also has access to a comprehensive, in-house archive with over 200,000 data records on historical site use. Thanks to the constantly progressing recording and digitisation of the most important national and international sources, it is now often possible to clarify many questions efficiently and quickly - for example regarding potential contamination of explosive ordnance from wartime events - without the need for time-consuming and cost-intensive "on-site research".

If important questions remain unanswered after our "desk research", we conduct further research at local, national and global level or track down contemporary witnesses and other sources of knowledge to uncover the secrets of the past. The results of our research flow into basic investigations, historical-genetic reconstructions (HgR) and historical explorations, among other things, and thus provide important information for the planning of future construction projects.
